Moscowbased Promsvyazbank said on June 4th it will be releasing "Angry Cards," debit cards giving users a 10 per cent discount on Angry Birds merchandise.
"Some clients are demanding their Angry Birds cards right now before the official launch," said Ivan Pyatkov, director for retail sales and technology at Promsvyazbank, to the Associated Press.
Pyatkov said the bank intends to print 50,000 cards. He hopes its patrons will be urbanites earning over $1,000 a month in the 2535 demographic. Angry Birds has been downloaded over 10 million times in Russia.
This is the first foray into the banking sector for Rovio Entertainment, the Finnish company which owns Angry Birds. Usually, its merchandise is of the kitsch variety, including birdblazoned clothing (flipflops, socks) or novelty items (gummy sweets, baby costumes).
The debit cards are part of a multipronged marketing strategy to permanently monetize the app.
Rivio has a partnership with Nokia; the game is preinstalled on all phones shipped in 2012, and recently it announced Angry Birds will be available to stream on Samsung televisions.
Peter Vesterbacka, head of development at the company, has said he hopes Angry Birds will become the next Disney or Sanrio, the Japanese producer of all things Hello Kitty.
